Belle’s Couch

May 21, 2009 by Belle's Mom

This is funny! This is the first time Belle has ever slept on the back of her couch. I keep a small loveseat around for her to sleep on (the only furniture she is allowed on). I came home the other day and she was sleeping on top of the back of the couch. Her […]

My Dog’s Dew Claw

May 5, 2009 by Belle's Mom

Removing a dog’s dew claw is a tough decision, but they can become caught on things and get torn – especially in active dogs. Talk to your veterinarian before you make a decision.

How to Clip Your Dog’s Toenails

April 21, 2009 by Belle's Mom

Clipping black toenails is even harder

For those of us who are a little nervous about cutting an animal’s toenails, grooming day can be a little stressful. This is especially difficult when your dog has black toenails! Luckily Belle has white nails, making it easier for me to see the quick of the nail. Try Toenail Scissors with a Guard I […]

Belle Beats the Scratching!

April 15, 2009 by Belle's Mom

Finally, the scratching and itching has stopped! I finally got Belle’s fleas under control, though this may have had something to do with the recent freezing temperatures we had for a couple of nights. I am continuing her new flea treatment, and weekly bath treatments. Her hair has grown back at the base of her […]

How To Get a Dog to Take a Pill

April 7, 2009 by Belle's Mom

Dog medicine

If you’ve read any of my latest posts, you know that I now give Belle antihistamines daily. Well, we’ve also changed her flea control, upon advice form the vet, from Frontline Plus to Comfortis, which comes as a pill. She had another flea infestation recently, so the vet suggested we switch flea treatments as some […]

Still Scratching: Dog Flea Troubles

April 3, 2009 by Belle's Mom

Goodness, dog allergies do seem to be a problem these days. But I guess if I am any example, it is definitely pollen season. My allergies are just about to drive me crazy too. So, I’ve been giving Belle dog allergy medicine every 12 hours for several days. I know I should be patient, but […]

How to Treat A Dog With Allergies

March 27, 2009 by Belle's Mom

My dog Belle has allergies as well as sensitive skin, which can be a terrible combination. She itches and scratches all year round, sending fur flying throughout the house (thank goodness for the Roomba – for those of you who have dogs who shed year-round, this is a blessing!). Her skin sometimes gets really inflamed. […]

The Dog Afraid of Thunder – My Dog’s Storm Fear

March 26, 2009 by Belle's Mom

Many dogs are afraid of storms. But when that behavior becomes harmful to the dog, what do you do? My dog Belle was always afraid of storms, but it got much worse. And unfortunately, my attempts to comfort her actually reinforced her negative behavior. After speaking with a friend who is a dog training expert, I started crating her during storms and covering the crate with a sheet. This helps her to feel safer and keeps her from hurting herself during her panic.

My adopted secondhand, no, thirdhand dog

March 25, 2009 by Belle's Mom

When I got Belle, she was on her second owner already. She had been adopted from the Humane Society and then returned a few weeks later.  Then another family adopted her. This family had her for a year or two but then made the decision to give her someone who could spend more time with her.  Since they […]
